FeMn
Ferro Manganese
A high-manganese alloy made by heating a mixture of oxides, MnO2 and Fe2O3, with carbon in a blast furnace or an electric arc furnace. Carbothermal reduction of the oxides produces the alloy, which steel makers use as a deoxidiser and desulphuriser.
Grades and chemistry
| Grade | Mn | Si | C | P | S |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low carbon | 7580 max | 1.5 | 1 | 0.05 | 0.03 |
| Medium carbon | 7880 max | 1.5 | 1.52 max | 0.05 | 0.03 |
| High carbon | 7078 max | 2 | 68 max | 0.25 | 0.03 |
| Special carbon | 7580 max | 1.5 | 68 max | 0.05 | 0.03 |
Figures are percentages. Where a grade has a ceiling, it sits beneath the value.
